Murray State Beats APSU 6-5 in Extra Innings
The Murray State Racers (14-22, 4-11 MVC) defeated the Austin Peay Governors (30-8, 8-4 MVC) 6-5 in eight innings on Tuesday in Clarksville, Tenn.
The Racers had more hits 12-9, and more stolen bases 3-0. Each team was charged with one error. Â
The game was a back-and-forth affair, with the teams trading runs throughout the early innings. Hannah Sutton was the first Racer to break through, scoring on a Bailey Broemmer fielder's choice in the top of the second. The Governors responded with an RBI double from Katie Raper that tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the inning. The Racers added another pair of runs in the third with Katy Huels scoring on a Hannah Sutton groundout and Kenley Minor reaching home on a fielder's choice by Ailey Schyck. Â
Austin Peay responded once again in the bottom of the third with two runs of their own. Huels responded again in the fourth with a double to right center and Kenley Minor sent her home with an RBI single. The Racers added one more in the fifth when Courtney Sandy sent Hannah Sutton home with a bunt single following a deep triple from Sutton.
After adding one run in the fifth, the Governors entered the final inning trailing 5-4. Raylon Roach represented the tying run after reaching on a single and Sammie Shelander tied it 5-5 with a deep triple to right center, sending the game into extra innings.Â
Kayleigh White got the Racers going in the eighth with a single up the middle. Emmerson McKinnins followed that with a single to left, pushing White up to second. Katy Huels then delivered the winning run, singling to center field and scoring White to put the Racers ahead 6-5. Karlye Graber retired the side in order and struck out one batter in the final inning to close out the rivalry win.Â
Hannah Sutton led the Racers at the plate, going 3-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Katy Huels, Kenley Minor, and Parker Holcombe had two hits each and Huels and Minor each had an RBI. Courtney Sandy, Kayleigh White, and Emmerson McKinnis each had one hit. Ailey Schyck and Bailey Broemmer each had an RBI. Â
Karlye Graber (5-7) got the win in relief, going five and two-thirds inning allowing two earned runs and seven hits while collecting two strikeouts. Bre Haislip was the starter and pitched two and one-third, allowing two hits and one earned, walking two and striking out one.Â
Raylon Roach and Sam Leski led the Governors with two hits each. Ashley Martin (9-2) was the losing pitcher, allowing nine hits and three earned runs while striking out nine.Â
Murray State returns to the road this weekend for an MVC series against Northern Iowa. The Racers will travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa for a weekend series from April 11-13. The first game is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT on Friday.
