The Racers and Salukis are engaged in a showdown of second place teams in The Valley

The Murray State Racers took game one Friday night at Johnny Reagan Field 8-3 over the Southern Illinois Salukis in the first of three games this weekend in Murray, Kentucky.

The Racers (31-11) moved into solo second place in the Missouri Valley Conference at 13-6, a game behind Missouri State at 14-5. Murray State and SIU play game two of their series Saturday at 2 p.m.

Nic Schutte shook off an indifferent start to pitch six innings, with the last four innings in no-hit fashion. The junior from Louisville gave three runs, on four hits with five strike outs and four walks to improve to 5-3.

After falling behind 3-0 after two Saluki turns at the plate, the Racers scored a pair of runs in the second and third and took the lead for good when Jonathan Hogart drove home Dan Tauken for a 4-3 lead after three innings. MSU scored some insurance runs in the bottom of the eight on RBI hits from Dom Decker and Will Vierling.

Dylan Zentko and Graham Kelham closed out MSU's 31^st win of the season by retiring the last nine Salukis.

Game Notes

With the win, the Racers are 13-5 at home this season and 33-13 in the last two seasons.
Hogart collected his 24th double of the season in the 3rd to increase his MVC-leading total in 2025.
He is now second for doubles in a single season at MSU and is chasing the all-time record is 29 by Davis Sims in 2018.
Hogart leads the Racers with 22 multiple-hit games after a pair of hits tonight, Dustin Mercer is second with 18.
Hogart has a hit-streak of 12 games after this game vs SIU.
Mercer had the longest hit streak of the season for the Racers at 13.
Dom Decker extended his team-leading on-base streak that is now 25 games, Hogart's streak is 24 games.
Game two in the series is set for 2 p.m. Saturday with Isaac Silva (6-2, 3.86) set to take the ball for the Racers.
The Racers are celebrating 85 seasons of collegiate baseball this weekend.
Tonight, MSU's newest baseball alumni to the MSU Hall of Fame, Daniel Calhoun threw out the first pitch.
Calhoun played for Coach Rob McDonald (2005-09) and was 11-3 with a 2.32 ERA as a senior in 2009 and led the nation with only six walks in in 97 innings.
Calhoun was a four-time All-America Selection, OVC Pitcher of the Year and was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals.
Sunday's 1 p.m. game is Johnny Reagan Day as the program honors the coach to create the program and coached it for 36 seasons from 1958-1993.
