Solid Schutte leads Racers Past Salukis

The Racers and Salukis are engaged in a showdown of second place teams in The Valley

The Racers (31-11) moved into solo second place in the Missouri Valley Conference at 13-6, a game behind Missouri State at 14-5. Murray State and SIU play game two of their series Saturday at 2 p.m.

Nic Schutte shook off an indifferent start to pitch six innings, with the last four innings in no-hit fashion. The junior from Louisville gave three runs, on four hits with five strike outs and four walks to improve to 5-3.

After falling behind 3-0 after two Saluki turns at the plate, the Racers scored a pair of runs in the second and third and took the lead for good when Jonathan Hogart drove home Dan Tauken for a 4-3 lead after three innings. MSU scored some insurance runs in the bottom of the eight on RBI hits from Dom Decker and Will Vierling.

Dylan Zentko and Graham Kelham closed out MSU's 31st win of the season by retiring the last nine Salukis.

- Tonight, MSU's newest baseball alumni to the MSU Hall of Fame, Daniel Calhoun threw out the first pitch.
- Calhoun played for Coach Rob McDonald (2005-09) and was 11-3 with a 2.32 ERA as a senior in 2009 and led the nation with only six walks in in 97 innings.
- Calhoun was a four-time All-America Selection, OVC Pitcher of the Year and was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals.
- Sunday's 1 p.m. game is Johnny Reagan Day as the program honors the coach to create the program and coached it for 36 seasons from 1958-1993.
