Racers Suffer Pair of Losses at SEMO Invitational

Murray State returns against Southeast Missouri on Saturday.
Murray State Volleyball (2-6) suffered a pair of losses to Weber State and Iowa on Friday in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
In the opening match of the day, a 10 a.m. CT contest against the Weber State Wildcats (6-1), the Navy & Gold were swept despite a pair of close sets to open the match. The Racers recorded 16 kills while hitting .313 in a 27-25 loss. The second set was much of the same, with the Racers putting up 13 kills and hitting .235 in a 25-23 loss. The Wildcats closed the match with a 25-13 win in the third set to clinch a sweep. Â
Ella Vogel led all players with 18 kills, while Federica Nuccio had nine and Mija Pristovnik put up six. Katie Titus led the team with 28 assists, and Bailey Keusch led all players with 13 digs. Â
Ashley Gneiting led the Wildcats with 10 kills and added six aces, while Morgan Pratt led all players with 30 assists. Â
The Racers faced the Iowa Hawkeyes (7-1) at 3 p.m. CT in their second match of the day. The Hawkeyes came on strong in the first set, taking a 25-11 win, putting up 16 kills and hitting .500. Â
The Racers began chipping away in the second set, increasing their kills from seven to 11 and improving their hitting percentage from .091 to .259, but ultimately fell 25-15. Â
They continued to fight in the third set, holding the Hawkeyes to their worst hitting percentage of the match (.216) and posting their highest kill total at 13. After weathering several Hawkeye runs, the Racers tied the set 23-23 before ultimately dropping the tight set 25-23, allowing Iowa to clinch the match. Â
Lily Burnett and Mija Pristovnik tied to lead the Racers with eight kills each, and Alexa Watts added a career-high five. Paige Brock led the team with 21 assists and added a block, while Halle Forester put up eight digs and an ace. Haidi Miliou put up a pair of blocks and three kills, and Samantha Nelson added an ace with three digs.
The Racers are back in action on Saturday, September 13, to wrap up SEMO Invitational play against the hosting Redhawks. The match is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT at Houck Field House.Â
