Racers Fall to Governors to end Billiken Invitational

Murray State reverse swept by Austin Peay.
The Murray State Racers (2-4) lost in five sets to the Austin Peay Governors (1-5) on Saturday morning at the Billiken Invitational in St. Louis, Mo.Â
The Navy & Gold got off to a hot start in the first set with an early 5-0 run and ended the set on another 4-0 run to move ahead with a 25-17 win. It was more of the same in the second set, as the Racers hit .370 and put up 14 kills to win 25-19 as Ella Vogel and Fecerica Nuccio combined for six of the last seven scores to put Murray State ahead 2-0.
The Governors battled back to win the third set 25-14 and hung on to win the fourth 25-23, forcing a crucial fifth set. Â
The final set was a back-and-forth affair, but the Governors were bolstered by an early 4-0 run and a 3-0 run to end the set and hand them the match win. Â
Ella Vogel led all players with 21 kills while Federica Nuccio added 17. Katie Titus was the match leader with a career-high 48 assists, and Mija Pristovnik led the Racers with 10 digs. Â
Dani Kopacz led the Governors with 17 kills, while Sarah Butler had 30 assists and Reagan Anderson had 23 digs. Â
The Racers will continue their non-conference schedule next weekend in Cape Girardeau, Mo. at a tournament hosted by Southeast Missouri. Their first match is scheduled for 10 a.m. CT on Friday, September 12. They will face the Iowa Hawkeyes at 3 p.m. CT and face Southeast Missouri at 2 p.m. CT on Saturday, September 13. Â
