Rubber Match set for Saturday
The Murray State Racers (17-19, 8-7 MVC) and Bradley Braves (11-27, 5-11 MVC) split a Missouri Valley Conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Racer Field in Murray, Kentucky.
Game 1: Bradley 5, Murray State 3
Both offenses were slow out of the gate in the opening game of the series, as the Racers and Braves each put up just one run through the first six innings.
Bradley got on the board first in the second inning on an RBI triple before Riley Jestadt drove in the first run for Murray State with a sacrifice fly that scored Kenley Minor to make it 1-1.
The game was quiet until the seventh inning, when the Braves racked up four runs in the top of the inning with a pair of RBI doubles and a sacrifice fly. Trailing 5-1, the Racers attempted to mount a comeback behind a two-RBI homer from Bailey Broemmer but were unable to score again, falling 5-3.
Bre Haislip (8-6) took the loss in the circle after pitching 6 2/3 innings, allowing five earned runs on nine hits, and striking out four.
Bailey Broemmer recorded two RBI and went 1-for-3 at the plate with a home run, while Riley Jestadt had one RBI on a sacrifice fly. Kenley Minor was the only other Racer to record a hit, and Katy Huels had one stolen base.
Game 2: Murray State 10, Bradley 0
The slow start in Game 1 did not plague the Racers again in the second game of the afternoon, as they got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the first.
Kynadee Warner scored first on a play that saw Allie Waldron reach base on a fielder's choice, Parker Holcombe added one more with a sacrifice fly, and Bailey Broemmer capped off the inning with an RBI single that made it 3-0.
Adison Hicks added one more for Murray State in the second with a single that scored Lily Wolf to make it 4-0.
The Racers stayed hot in the third inning, loading the bases before pinch-hitter Ava Ozment sent a towering shot over the fence in left-center for her first career grand slam and the third home run of her career.
Leading 8-0 in the fourth inning, the Racers got some insurance from Adison Hicks as the junior hit a two-run homer down the left-field line to put the exclamation point on a run-rule win for the Racers.
Raylee Roby (3-2) earned the win, pitching a shutout in five innings, allowing just five hits, and striking out five while giving up just one walk.
Ava Ozment recorded four RBI, while Adison Hicks went 3-for-3 with three RBI, a home run, and a pair of runs scored. Allie Waldron went 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Parker Holcombe and Bailey Broemmer each went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Kynadee Warner added a hit as well.
