Racers Host Georgia Southern in First-Ever Meeting, Seek First Win Under Madsen

MURRAY, Ky. - Murray State looks to shake off a winless start to the season Sunday when it hosts Georgia Southern in the first meeting ever between the two programs. Kickoff at Cutchin Field is set for 1 p.m. CT, with the match streaming on ESPN+.
The Racers (0-3-1, 0-0-0 MVC) enter the match off a 2-2 draw with UT Martin on Thursday, their most encouraging performance yet under first-year head coach Ben Madsen. Murray State had been outscored 9-1 in its first three games, losses to Ole Miss (1-0), Missouri (3-1) and Notre Dame (3-0), before finding its footing against the Skyhawks, matching its shot total from the previous three games combined.
Junior forward Breece Bass has been the engine of that push. The preseason all-Missouri Valley Conference selection leads Murray State with a goal, five shots and three shots on goal, and was tabbed the Racers' lone representative on the 2026 Preseason MVC Team after leading the conference in shots taken a year ago. Abby (Jo) Dalessandro and Reagan Tate have also found the net, Tate's goal vs. UT Martin being the first of her career.
Georgia Southern (3-0-2, 0-0-0 SBC) brings one of the Sun Belt Conference's better early-season records into the nonconference road trip, having won four of its last five dating to a 4-1 rout of Mercer last Thursday. The Eagles enter unbeaten in five straight since an exhibition loss at Auburn, with wins over North Florida (2-1) and FGCU (2-0) sandwiched around draws against Jacksonville and UNC Wilmington.
Georgia Southern was picked ninth in the Sun Belt preseason poll after missing the conference tournament each of the last two seasons, but the Eagles have opened the year 3-0-2, outshooting opponents 78-64 and allowing just three goals in five matches. Kendall Wilson leads the attack with three goals and a team-high six points on 11 shots, and Addison Comer and Anna Braziunas have each chipped in a goal and an assist. Goalkeeper Quinn Wilson has started all five matches in net, going 3-0-2 with a 0.60 goals-against average, 30 saves and two shutouts.
Sunday's match is Murray State's "Kids Day" promotion at Cutchin Field and marks the Racers' last of a two-match homestand before facing Marshall on the road Sept. 3.
