Freddie Roach enters his first season as the defensive line coach on Chris Hatcher’s staff at Murray State.
Roach takes over a defensive line that returns five players that recorded double figures in tackles a season ago. The unit is led by senior defensive end Kevin Robinson, who led the OVC with seven sacks last season.
Roach comes to MSU after serving as the defensive line coach at East Mississippi Community College. In that one season, the Lions went a perfect 12-0 on their way to the school’s first ever National Championship.
The defensive line was anchored by First-Team All-America defensive end Denico Autry. Autry was named the Defensive MVP of the national championship game after recording a pair of sacks in the 55-47 victory.
He finished the season with 81 tackles, including 11 sacks, 24 tackles-for-loss, four forced fumbles, two pass break-ups and a school-record 41 quarterback hurries.
Roach arrived at EMCC after serving two seasons as an assistant on the strength and conditioning staff at Alabama. In his first season back with the Crimson Tide, Roach was a part of the 2009 BCS National Championship team.
Roach was a standout linebacker at Alabama from 2002-05, and finished his career as the 10th all-time leading tackler in school history with 272 career tackles. He started 40 games and registered 151 solo tackles, 25 tackles-for-loss, four sacks, 17 quarterback pressures, 15 pass break-ups, six forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.
After red-shirting his first year, Roach returned an interception 41 yards in his first collegiate game against Middle Tennessee. He went on to start 10 games that season and was named to the 2002 Scripps/FWAA Freshman All-America Team.
His sophomore season was his best statistically as he recorded 85 tackles, including seven tackles-for-loss and five pass break-ups.
In 2004, Roach ranked among the team leaders with 57 tackles and nine tackles-for-loss. He closed out his career by ranking third on the team with 66 tackles, while leading the team with nine pass break-ups.
Roach went on to be a two-time Associated Press Second-Team All-SEC selection, as well as the recipient of the 2005 Lee Roy Jordan Headhunter Award as a senior. He capped his collegiate career by being chosen to play in the 2006 Senior Bowl.
He was also selected to Alabama’s All-Decade Team of the 2000’s as compiled by the ‘BAMA Magazine and BamaMag.com.
After his collegiate career, Roach signed a free-agent contract with the New England Patriots, but suffered an injury during training camp.
Roach was a prep standout at Brooks High School where he was a two-time first-team all-state selection by The Birmingham News and the Alabama Sports Writers Association.
He was named the 4A Back of the Year after recording 194 tackles, including 23 tackles-for-loss and six forced fumbles. He also rushed for 1,277 yards and 18 touchdowns.
In his career, Roach rushed for over 3,000 yards and recorded 500 tackles, while blocking 11 kicks.
Roach graduated with a bachelor’s degree in human environmental sciences.
He is one of four brothers to sign to play football at Alabama.
