After spending four seasons as a member of the Murray State women’s basketball team, Ashley Hayes moved into the college coaching ranks. She spent her first coaching year at University of North Carolina-Greensboro and has now been on the bench for the Racers again. She is starting her second season as assistant coach at Murray State.
Hayes is responsible for working with guards, primarily wing players. She also assists with recruiting, academics and opponent scouting.
A Racer standout from 2003 to 2007, Hayes left MSU holding the school’s all-time lead in career three-point field goals record (143) and shares the single game record (8). After serving one year under Lynne Agee at North Carolina-Greensboro, Hayes returns to the RSEC where she played for four seasons.
While with the Spartans Hayes worked with the guards, was in charge of tape exchange, and assisted with all other facets of the program.
During her sophomore season at MSU she led the nation in three-point shooting for three consecutive weeks and finished the season ranked No. 24 in the nation with 2.4 three-pointers per game.
She followed up her outstanding sophomore campaign with an equally impressive junior year. Hayes finished the season ranked third in the conference in three-point baskets per game with 2.12 and 10th in the conference in three-point shooting percentage, with a .364 mark.
“Having a former player on my staff is exciting,” Cross said. “Ashley is invaluable to our student-athletes as she knows what I expect and my personality. She is able to speak with recruits and their families about MSU from the viewpoint of a Racer and will no doubt convey the love she has for this university and our program.”
As a former player, Hayes is very well aware of what it takes to be successful in the OVC and can lend a helping hand in recruiting for Murray State.
“Having played in this conference, I know the style of play and I know the university and Coach Cross,” she said.
Prior to her collegiate career she was a standout prep athlete at Kokomo High School. In her senior season she led her team to a 26-0 record and a state championship. She was named team MVP and was a McDonald’s All-American nominee.
