Before MSU
James was a first team all-conference player for Sauk Valley and won the Arrowhead Athletic Conference Academic Excellence Award.  During the 2014-15 season for the Skyhawks, she led her team in scoring with 20.5 points and averaged three rebounds, two assists,  and two steals per game. James was the 11th-leading scorer in the nation among all junior college players last season and was number  two in 3-pointers made per game. James also ranked 22nd in the nation in free throw percentage.

She shot over 40 percent from the field and 39 percent from the 3-point line on 206 attempts. From the free throw line, James shot 83  percent in 93 attempts. James scored 20 or more in 13 of her 20 games and scored in double figures in every game she finished last  season. James scored more than 30 points three times. Â
