Benita Buggs came to the Racers staff in July 2011 after being an assistant coach at Bolivar Central High School for four years. Buggs is responsible for working with the post players, supervising managers, recruiting, and scouting.
“We are excited to add Benita to our staff,” Cross said. “She is a bright young coach with the ability to have a major impact both on the court and in recruiting. Her personality and ability to get things done quickly really stood out to us during the time we spent recruiting recently in Tennessee. She is well respected by both high school and AAU coaches in the talent rich state of Tennessee. Benita is a tireless worker and will be a tremendous asset to our student-athletes as they strive to achieve their potential on and off of the court.”
“I am excited to join the Racer Family,” Buggs said. “When I first set foot on the MSU campus I fell in love. This opportunity is a dream come true for me and I am looking forward to sharing this special university with future Racers. I am excited about working with Coach Cross and having an impact on the lives of our student-athletes. Our student-athletes will find that, like the rest of the staff, I will be more dedicated to their success then they are.”
Buggs comes to the Racers after serving as an assistant coach at Bolivar Central High School for the past four seasons. While with the Tigers she coached the team to three District 12-AA Championships, 2 Region 6-AA titles and two sectional appearances. The team advanced to the Elite 8 in the Tennessee State Tournament in 2008-09.
The Bolivar, Tenn., native produced eight all-district players and saw two players sign with NCAA Division I teams.
Buggs also had a strong collegiate playing career at Boise State and Butler County (Kan.) Junior College. She played her final two seasons for Boise State (2004-06) and helped the team advance to the second round of the Western Athletic Conference tournament for the first time in several seasons. The two-year starter helped the team to a 15-15 finish in 2005-06, the most wins in over seven seasons for the Broncos.
She spent her first two seasons at Butler County (Kan.) Junior College as a starting guard. The three-time Jayhawk Junior college Conference West Player of the Week led the team in scoring as a sophomore. She averaged more than 12 points and five rebounds per game. Her efforts led to being ranked 12th as a two-guard in the nations junior college recruits.
Buggs has an associate’s degree in art from Butler County and a bachelor’s degree in communication from Boise State.
