Racers get past Morehead State 3-2 for 14th straight win, now 8-0 in OVC

The Murray State women's volleyball team laid its unbeaten Ohio Valley Conference mark and 13-match win streak on the line against visiting Morehead State. The Racers trailed two games to one, but brought it back to win 3-2 over the Eagles, 30-21, 26-30, 22-30, 30-18, 15-10.
In Game 1, the Racers (14-4, 8-0 OVC) and Eagles (13-8, 6-2 OVC) battled to a 19-19 tie, but the Racers hit a higher gear and scored 11 of the last 13 points for the win.
Morehead State fought back in Game 2, scoring seven of the last 11 points to even the match at 1-1. Murray State led Game 3 14-12 before the Eagles went on a 9-0 run en route to the 30-22 win.
With the score tied 13-13 in Game 4, Murray State went on an 8-1 run and staved off a late Eagle run to even the match at 2-2 with a 30-28 win.
In the deciding game, with the score tied at 7-7, the Racers used a 7-1 run to push to match point 14-8. Morehead State wouldn't go quietly, scoring two more points before Murray State took the final point for the match win.
Murray State was led by sophomore outside hitter Paige Sun, who had a team season-high 27 kills and a match-high 25 digs for her 16th double-double in 18 matches this season. Junior outside hitter Kimberly Bunnage added 16 kills and 17 digs, while freshman outside hitter Lilli Zhan had 15 kills and 23 digs. Sophomore setter Nikki Wong slammed 10 kills and a tam-high 60 assists.
Zhan had a co-match-high five blocks, while freshman middle blocker Katie Kemezys and junior middle blocker Danielle Sutterer had four apiece.
Morehead State was paced by 23 kills from Jennifer Kennedy. Diana Zipp added 19 kills, while Casie Garland had 17. Cherelle Lampkins had a team-high 19 digs, while Kennedy had 16 and Johanna Thompson had 13.
Garland handed out a match-high 63 assists and served up a match-high five aces to go with a co-match-high five blocks.
"Before Game 4, our passing look like it was hit-or-miss," said Racer head coach David Schwepker. "We adjusted to their hitting in Game 4, and our blocking was a big part of that. It was a real battle, but we knew it would be a battle coming in."
Murray State travels to OVC rival Southeast Missouri State on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. match.
