Senior forward Cuthbert Victor was selected Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference First Team, while the Murray State Racers were picked to finish third in a poll of the league's coaches and sports information directors announced today at OVC Basketball Media Day at the Wildhorse Saloon in Nashville, Tenn.
The Racers, under the direction of first-year head coach Mick Cronin, received 168 points, including one first-place vote. Defending co-champions Austin Peay and Morehead State were selected first and second respectively in the polling.
The Governors received 198 points, including 18 first-place votes, while Morehead State had 172 points and three first-place votes. Southeast Missouri was picked fourth with 123 points, followed by Tennessee Tech in fifth with 114 and Tennessee-Martin in sixth with 91 points.
"I think we were picked third based on our tradition more than anything else," Cronin said. "We do have six seniors with a lot of experience and those guys will determine, with their attitudes and their effort, what type of season we have."
Victor, a native of St. Croix, Virgin Islands, was one of five players named to the First Team. The 2002-03 All-OVC Second Team honoree joined Morehead State's Ricky Minard, Austin Peay's Adrian Henning and Josh Lewis and Tennessee Tech's Cameron Crisp as the First Team selections. Minard, the 2002-03 Player of the Year, was chosen as the 2003-04 Preseason OVC Player of the Year.
"All of the preseason selections are based on the numbers and stats from last year," Cronin said. "Cuthbert put up impressive numbers last year in OVC play and he deserves to be included on the First Team."
The 2003-04 Racers will be unveiled on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Fan Jam at the Regional Special Events Center, while MSU will open the 2003-04 exhibition season on Monday, Nov. 3 at 7:15 p.m. against the Global All-Stars at the RSEC.
NOTE: It was also announced during OVC Media Day that the Racers' home game against Morehead State on Jan. 31 and their road game at Southeast Missouri on Feb. 7 will be televised live by Fox Sports Net South.
