Miscues, fouls hamper Lady Racers in 69-56 loss at Jackson State

Points off of turnovers and the free-throw advantage was the difference in the final score, as host Jackson State pushed past the Lady Racers 69-56 tonight.
Murray State (2-3) made 26 turnovers and committed 26 fouls in the loss. Jackson State (4-1) scored 17 points off of turnovers, while MSU scored 12, and the Lady Tigers made 15 free throws to the Lady Racers' seven.
"I'm just real disappointed," said MSU head coach Joi Williams. "We had 26 turnovers, and you can't win with that. We were careless with the ball and made some unforced errors."
The Lady Racers were led by senior guard Stacy Holmes and freshman forward Angela Mullins, who put in eight points apiece. Sophomore center Lori Trumblee added seven points for MSU.
Holmes and Trumblee each grabbed a team-high seven rebounds for Murray State, while senior guard Jenny Bowden and junior guard Brittany Park handed our a team-high four assists apiece.
Jackson State was paced by 27 points from Amie Williams. Latesha Lee added 16 points and had game-highs with 10 rebounds, 10 assists and seven steals.
Jackson State jumped out to an 8-3 lead early on, by Murray State brought it back on a jumpshot by freshman Kelly Shelton and a Trumblee layup, then took the lead on a layup by senior guard Megan Fuqua to cap a 6-0 run. The lead seesawed until MSU tied the game at 16-16 on a jumper by freshman guard Gerraca Matthews, then took the lead on a Trumblee jumper and expanded its lead on a jumpshot from Matthews, leading 20-16 with 7:59 left in the first half.
From that point, the Lady Tigers went on a 9-0 run over the next two minutes, getting out to a 25-20 lead with six minutes remaining in the period and never relinquishing that lead.
Jackson State led 46-36 with 13:38 left in regulation when Murray State mounted a comeback attempt, scoring seven unanswered points when Fuqua hit a three-pointer and Mullins sank two free throws and a jumpshot to pull to within 46-43, but the Lady Tigers were able to keep MSU at arm's length for the rest of the game.
