Murray State senior guard Chris Shumate was named the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week, while junior forward Kelvin Brown was tabbed as the OVC's Newcomer of the Week after their performances in last week's road sweep over conference foes Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky.
Shumate, a native of Louisville, Ky., shot a blistering 71.4 percent from the field (15-of-21), including 6-of-9 from three-point range as he averaged 21.5 points per game in the two wins. He turned in his best effort scoring 31 points to lead the Racers to a 97-75 win over Morehead while hitting 11-of-15 shots from the field, including 4-of-7 from behind the three-point arc. Shumate also chipped in 12 points in the Racers' come-from-behind 82-71 victory at EKU.
Brown provided an offensive spark off the bench in the Racers' two OVC victories. The Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., native netted 10 points and six rebounds in just 12 minutes of action at Morehead State, then followed that with a 23-point, nine-board effort at EKU. A transfer from Fort Scott (Kan.) Community College, Brown shot at least 64 percent in each of the contests and finished the week with a 7-of-8 performance at the charity stripe, along with four assists and three steals.
The Racers, 12-2 overall and 2-0 in the OVC, return to action as they open a three-game homestand by hosting Samford on Thursday at 7:15 p.m. at the Regional Special Events Center in Murray, Ky.
