Lady Racers Set To Host 2004 MSU Twilight Invitational On Saturday
4/21/2004 12:00:00 AM | Women's Track and Field
The Murray State men's and women's track and field teams will host the 2004 MSU Twilight Invitational on Saturday at Roy Stewart Stadium / Marshall Gage Track. Admission is free and fans are encouraged to attend.
The meet, which will be MSU's final warm-up event prior to the 2004 Ohio Valley Conference Championships on May 7-8 in Birmingham, Ala., will begin at 11 a.m. with the field events and continue throughout the day with the final event scheduled to begin at 5:10 p.m.
The Twilight will include 11 women's teams and 11 men's teams, while 14 schools will be represented overall including Arkansas State, Austin Peay, Bethel, Evansville, Fisk, Memphis, Middle Tennessee, Southeast Missouri, Southern Illinois, Southwest Missouri, Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech and Vanderbilt, along with the host Racers.
"We're excited about this weekend's home meet," said second-year MSU head coach Norbert Elliott. "We've had a pretty solid spring so far, and we've got several athletes who have really stepped it up over the last few weeks, so this home meet should be a great thing for them."
A couple of those athletes include senior sprinter Joan Lettman on the women's side and freshman distance runner Wesley Korir on the men's side.
Lettman, a native of Toronto, Ontario, has been very successful this spring in both the 400- and 200-meter dash. The highlight of her season up to this point came on April 3 when she won first-place in the 400-meter dash at the Gatorade Classic in Cape Girardeau, Mo., with a time of 54.59 seconds, good enough to qualify for next month's NCAA Regionals.
Korir, a native of Eldoret, Kenya and this week's OVC Male Track Athlete of the Week, has won four straight 5,000-meter titles dating back to his win at the Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Championships in February, and he continues to improve with each meet.
"Joan and Wesley have really stepped it up this spring and they've certainly made us better in a lot of ways," Elliott said. "They're both scoring a lot points for us, and we expect them to close out this season by getting even better."
Results from the MSU Twilight will be available here at www.GoRacers.com following the completion of the track events on Saturday evening.
