Melvin Claims 800m Title as Racers Conclude Drake Relays Competition

DES MOINES, Iowa – Murray State track and field wrapped up a successful weekend at the prestigious Drake Relays, highlighted by an individual title from Cheyenne Melvin and a trio of podium finishes at Drake Stadium.
Melvin provided the weekend's top highlight on Friday, capturing the Women's 800m championship. She crossed the finish line in 2:06.54 to secure the victory, becoming the first Racer to win an event at the Drake Relays.
The Racers' relay squads also made frequent trips to the podium. The 4x200m team of Amahrie Harsh, Breece Bass, Simone Joseph, and Serena Blackwood earned a second-place finish on Friday with a time of 1:36.83. On Saturday, the 4x400m relay team followed suit, as Bass, Harsh, Joseph, and Melvin combined for a 3:42.73 mark to take second overall.
In the sprints, Serena Blackwood showed consistent improvement throughout the meet. After finishing seventh in the 100m on Friday (11.69), Blackwood shaved time off her mark on Saturday, clocking an 11.65 to earn a third-place finish. Alyssa Williams also competed in the event, finishing 20th on Friday in 11.99.
The 4x100m relay team of Williams, Joseph, Aniya Smith, and Blackwood remained consistent across both days of competition. The group finished sixth on Friday (45.58) before improving their time to 45.40 on Saturday to maintain their sixth-place standing in the finals.
In Friday's 400m action, Breece Bass led a trio of Racers with a ninth-place finish (55.44). Simone Joseph followed in 12th place (55.62), while Amahrie Harsh rounded out the group in 16th (56.46).
