Lady Racers Open 2004 OVC Outdoor Championships

The Murray State women's track and field team opened the 2004 Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championships today during the first of two days of competition at Samford University's Seibert Stadium in Birmingham, Ala.
Sophomore Chanel Morgan, a native of Denver, Col., led the way for MSU with a sixth-place finish and three points in the long jump with a distance of 5.60 meters.
Sophomore Megan Rainville of Greenville, Ind., scored two points for MSU after earning a seventh-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11 minutes, 51.42 seconds.
The Lady Racers also had several athletes perform well in preliminary action and qualify for Saturday's finals. Leading the way was senior Joan Lettman, a native of Toronto, Ontario, after posting a time of 24.44 in the 200-meter dash and a time of 55.18 in the 400-meter dash to make the finals in both events. Lettman's already qualified for the NCAA Mid-East Regionals on May 28-29 at LSU (Baton Rouge, La.) in the 400 after making the necessary time earlier this spring.
Freshman LaShondra Durias of Louisville, Ky., had a strong first day of competition after posting a time of 12.11 seconds in the 100-meter dash and a time of 24.69 in the 200-meter dash to qualify for Saturday's finals in both events. Another freshman from Louisville, Nicole Peterson, also qualified for the finals in two events after turning times of 14.48 in the 100-meter hurdles and 1:03.79 in the 400-meter hurdles on Friday.
Saturday's final round is set to begin at 9 a.m. with the men's discus and the women's triple jump.
