The Murray State Lady Racers set a team arena record with nine blocked shots, and senior guard Rebecca Remington claimed a double-double with a game-high 28 points and a team-high 11 rebounds in MSU's 82-73 Ohio Valley Conference win over Tennessee State tonight.
Six Lady Racers swatted at least one blocked shot in helping MSU get the most blocked shots in a single game since getting an 88-85 win over Tennessee-Martin on Jan. 14, 1993, in Racer Arena. The previous Murray State high in blocked shots in the Regional Special Events Center was seven.
Tennessee State tied the game for the sixth time when Madison Adams hit a jumpshot with 11:38 left in the first half to tie the score at 15-15, but the Lady Racers (7-10, 3-3 OVC) took off, scoring the next six points on two baskets by sophomore guard Ashley Hayes and a jumper by Remington.
The Lady Tigers (5-12, 2-4 OVC) brought it back, cutting the MSU lead to 25-22 when Kendra Bailey popped in a jumpshot with 7:46 left in the period, but Murray State went on an 11-2 run over the next five minutes, pushing out to as much as a 36-24 lead before settling in to a 36-28 halftime score.
Remington had 16 points at the half on 8-for-10 shooting and grabbed six first-half rebounds.
In the second half, MSU pushed out to a 13-point lead early on, and led 54-42 with 13:10 left in regulation, but the Lady Tigers went on a 12-0 run to tie the game at 54-54 when Bailey hit a jumper with 10:52 left.
TSU tied the game for the last time at 9:12 when LaKisha Clay's three-pointer knotted it at 57-57, but the Lady Racers used back-to-back baskets by junior forward Jessie Hirsch to keep Tennessee State at arm's length.
Murray State made 11 of 13 free-throw attempts over the last 5:29 to seal the win.
"We've been striving to do a better job boxing out, but Tennessee State did a great job crashing the boards," said MSU head coach Joi Felton. "We hit some big shots and had a couple of stops that were big for us. We changed our defenses up a little, too.
"We've been working on keeping a lead once we get it. Tennessee State is tough, and they did a really good job on us. We were concerned about Bailey coming into the game, and she showed why tonight."
Remington's double-double marked the second straight game for a Lady Racer to claim the feat, as Hirsch had 12 points and 14 rebounds against Tennessee-Martin on Tuesday.
Freshman guard Shaleea Petty had 15 points, five rebounds and five assists for Murray State. Junior guard Jill Fulkerson handed out a game-high six assists to go with six rebounds and seven points.
Remington finished the night with an 11-for-16 performance from the field and 5-for-6 from the line. Fulkerson was also 5-for-6 from the line, while sophomore guard Gerraca Matthews was 3-for-4 and senior forward Kaleena Miller and freshman center Katie Willinger each went 2-for-2.
For Tennessee State, Bailey finished with a double-double of her own, scoring 24 points and grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds to go with three blocked shots. Quanecia Fletcher added 20 points, three assists and four steals, while Leslie Dean had 12 points and LaTina Patterson had 10 points and a team-high five assists.
LaToya Clay grabbed eight rebounds for TSU, while KaSheena Powe had three assists.
Murray State visits Eastern Kentucky on Thursday in a 4:30 p.m. CT game. The Lady Racers then conclude this stretch with five of six games on the road with a Saturday game at Morehead State.
