The Lady Racers (1-4) hit 14 three-pointers, besting the previous tournament (all games) record of 13, set by Sam Houston State in 1993. MSU also bettered the previous tournament free-throw percentage record, sinking all eight of its attempts tonight.
Murray State's long-range assault was bolstered by freshman Paige Guffey, who set a tournament single game record and already tied the tournament all-games record with six three-point baskets. What's more: she got all six of her threes coming in off the bench in the second half, playing only 11 minutes.
For Murray State, the 100 points scored ties for 12th place on MSU's all-time records list, marking the first time since Feb. 13, 1993, that MSU hit the century mark. The 14 treys sunk by the team ties for second on the all-time list, while the 29 three-point attempts ties for 10th and the 39 baskets made ties for 13th.
Guffey's six-trey night ties her for fourth on the all-time list, while her sister, Amber Guffey, handed out a game-high 10 assists, tying her for ninth all-time.
Murray State took a 43-35 halftime lead into the locker room, playing a fast-paced, up-and-down game from baseline to baseline.
After Alcorn State (1-3) cut MSU's lead to five, 52-47, with 14:42 left in the game, the Lady Racers kept the Lady Braves at bay, getting out to as much as a 22-point lead late in the game.
Paige Guffey co-led Murray State with 18 points on a perfect 6-for-6 night behind the arc. Junior Paige Adlich also scored 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field and 4-for-4 night from the line.
Junior Erica Gordian claimed a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, going 5-for-8 from the field and 4-for-7 behind the arc. Freshman Ashley Nichole Hayes added 12 points on 6-for-10 shooting, while senior Jessie Hirsch put in 10 points on 5-for-9 shooting from the field.
Alcorn State was paced by 20 points from Tanika Nunez, who was 9-for-19 from the field but 0-for-7 from behind the arc. Rasaan Powell added 16 points, while Precious Sheats had 10. Tina Huff had a team-high seven rebounds for ASU.
Missouri beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff 79-51 in the first game of the tournament this afternoon to earn a slot in the tournament's championship game. UAPB will take on Alcorn State tomorrow at 5:00 p.m., followed by the championship game between Murray State and Missouri.
