It is no secret that the students are the backbone of Murray State basketball. The proof lies in the Feb. 12 game against Austin Peay, when the Racers rallied in the second half to a crucial 82-73 win on ESPN2. Freshman Justin Orr, after scoring a then-career-high 12 points, said, "The crowd definitely kept us into the game, and the momentum we got from the crowd kept the heat on Austin Peay."
Now, the Murray State athletic department and President F. King Alexander are asking for their help again, and they are giving the students a chance to see the Racers' quarterfinal Ohio Valley Conference tournament game for free on Tuesday, March 1.
Should the Racers host a first-round game on March 1, 500 tickets will be given away to students on game day, on a first come-first served basis. All the students need to do is enter at Gate C and show a valid student ID. The first 500 students to show up will get a free ticket, compliments of the athletic department and President Alexander.
The Racers have qualified for the OVC Tournament semifinals every year since 1988, and the Racers lead the OVC in tournament titles with 12. During a stretch between 1990 and 2000, the Racers made the championship game all 11 times and won seven of them. In the last 17 years, Murray State has appeared in the tournament finals 14 times, winning 10 of them.
