Assistant Athletic Director Christian Pope recently represented Murray State University by way of the National Association of Athletics Compliance Coordinators (NAACC) at the NCAA's regional convention, held in San Francisco.
"This was the fifth straight year I've been asked to present, Pope said. "As always, it's an honor to be asked and get the chance to serve."
Pope, who works to ensure that all MSU athletic endeavors comply with NCAA regulations, was selected as one of only eight individuals to represent the NAACC at the convention.
"'I'm fortunate that Murray State has always encouraged my attendance at these events run by the NCAA," Pope said. "I am proud to represent Murray State University on a national level, and I enjoy teaching when I can."
Pope also recently returned from an NCAA peer review study of Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, Conn. He was selected from a national pool of candidates by both CCSU and the NCAA for this review of the CCSU athletic department.
Pope is no stranger to this process, having been involved with the NCAA Peer review program since its inception in 1994. Pope was selected for training in February of 2001 by the NCAA and in addition to peer reviewing Central Connecticut State, he has also reviewed the athletic department at Butler University in Indianapolis. The reviews are broken down into four separate areas, each handled by a separate reviewer. The areas examined include Governance and Rules Compliance, Academic Integrity, Student-Athlete Welfare and the area of Minority and Equity Issues.
Pope, who has navigated this process with all four institutions with which he has worked (Murray State, Rhode Island, Georgia Southern, Chicago State), is confident Murray State is one of the finest institutions in the nation.
"Every time I go on a peer review team, I return invigorated about where MSU stacks up nationally." Pope said. "Murray State's athletic department has great programs from top to bottom."
