The Murray State women's volleyball team played with more enthusiasm and determination than it showed against Eastern Illinois last night, but Southeast Missouri State brought its hitters and won today's Ohio Valley Conference match 3-1, 28-30, 30-26, 30-27, 30-24.
The Racers (2-7, 0-2 OVC) improved on their offensive scheme, claiming an attack percentage of .264 through the first three games of the match, making only 10 errors in 140 attacks.
Unfortunately, the Redhawks (5-8, 2-0 OVC) brought power, with four of their players pounding out 15 or more kills and getting 84 kills as a team to MSU's 59.
Freshman outside hitter Alison Mugler picked up her third double-double of the season, scoring match-highs with 22 kills and 30 digs to go with three blocks. Mugler hit .321, with five errors in 53 attacks.
Junior middle blocker Holly Jansen rejected a career-high eight blocks to go with 13 kills, making only three errors in 27 attacks for a .370 percentage. Junior middle blocker Katie Kemezys added 17 kills and five blocks, making only three errors in 59 attacks.
On defense, freshman libero Heather Norris repelled 26 digs, while freshman outside hitter Alyssa Groves added 11 digs and freshman setter Kelsey Hubert had 10 to go with a team-high 47 assists.
Junior outside hitter Allie Hunt turned away four blocks for MSU, while Hubert and freshman outside hitter Lisa Forchee each had three. The Racers had 14.5 team blocks to SEMO's 2.0.
"I was pleased with everything today," said MSU head coach David Schwepker. "This team is just young. They need to play more consistently."
Southeast Missouri State was paced by Brenna Schlader, who had 20 kills and hit .378, with only three errors in 45 attacks. Brittany Hastings added 17 kills and a .300 percentage, while Katrina Niemeyer and Jill Miller each had 15 kills.
Jamie Baumstark had a match-high 62 assists to go with three aces and 22 digs. Lauren Scannell had a team-high 27 digs, while Miller had 14 and Jessica Koeper had 11.
Murray State will continue this four-match homestand on Friday at 7 p.m., when the Racers host OVC rival Austin Peay in Racer Arena.
