Murray State's football team fell to 12th ranked Tennessee-Martin, 42-14, today in Murray, Ky., in the Racers final game of the 2006 season. With the win, the Skyhawks (9-2, 6-1 OVC) will share the 2006 Ohio Valley Conference Championship with Eastern Illinois University. UTM will receive the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division I playoffs as a result of its 15-9 win over EIU earlier in the season.
The Racers conclude the first season of the Matt Griffin era with a 1-10 record and an 0-8 OVC mark. “I'm just so happy for the community of Martin and West Tennessee. They have a champion.” said UTM Head Coach Jason Simpson. “This is a great group of seniors. We have 18 guys that are good quality people and good quality players. I'm thankful to help them get here (winning an OVC Championship).”

“The last four weeks were tough on us,” Griffin said. “We redshirted 15 kids and started 13 true freshmen. We're not far off. We have tremendous support from our administration and Mr. (Allen) Ward, and our facilities are excellent. I can't wait for next year. The young kids, one year ago they were just finishing high school football and moving on to high school basketball, or track. Now, they will watch film and lift weights. That's exciting for us as a staff."
