Lady Racers oust UTM 58-45, will visit SEMO for OVC Tourney

Against Tennessee-Martin, the Lady Racers (11-16, 9-11 OVC) scored the first 13 points of the game, shooting 5-for-8 in the first six minutes of play, while the Skyhawks (8-19, 6-14 OVC) was 0-for-6 in that time.
Senior guard Jill Fulkerson was 3-for-4 from three-point range in the first half, as she and freshman guard/forward Ashley Nichole Hayes each had a game-high nine points at intermission, helping MSU to a 25-13 halftime lead. The Lady Racers were 5-for-10 from three-point range in the first half, while Tennessee-Martin shot 27.8 percent (5-for-18) from the field in the first 20 minutes.
Murray State jumped out to a 34-19 lead in the second half, but Tennessee-Martin went on a 7-0 run to close the gap to 34-26. MSU got out to a 46-33 lead with six minutes remaining in regulation, but the Skyhawks made things interesting with an 8-0 run to pull to within 46-41 with 2:44 left.
From that point, the Lady Racers used a 12-1 run over the next 2:28 to keep UTM at bay.
Murray State was led by junior forward Joi Scott's 23 points on 10-for-14 shooting. Scott had all of MSU's free throws, shooting 3-for-4 from the line.
Fulkerson finished with 15 points on 5-for-9 shooting from three-point range, while junior guard/forward Gerraca Matthews put in 11 points on 5-for-10 shooting from the field to go with a co-team-high three steals.
Hayes pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, while freshman guard Amber Guffey and sophomore guard Alaina Lee each handed out a team-high four assists. Hayes also had three steals for Murray State.
Tennessee-Martin was paced by Andreika Jackson, who had a team-high 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Kimberly Cox had a game-high five assists, while Crystal Fuller had a game-high four steals. Keva Robinson also grrabbed six rebounds for UTM.
OVC Championship Tournament
The 2006 O'Reilly's OVC Championship Tournament gets under way on Tuesday at campus sites.
Top seed Tennessee Tech (20-7, 16-4 OVC) will host No. 8 Eastern Illinois at 5:30 p.m., while No. 3 Samford (20-7, 15-5 OVC) hosts No. 6 Jacksonville State at 5:30. No. 4 Austin Peay (15-12, 12-8 OVC) hosts No. 5 Morehead State (15-12, 11-9 OVC) at 7 p.m., while No. 2 Southeast Missouri State (19-8, 16-4 OVC) hosts Murray State at 7 p.m.
The winners will play in the semifinals on Friday at the Gaylord Entertainment Center, with games being held at noon and 2 p.m. The championship game will be played Saturday at 11 a.m. in the GEC, and will be carried live by ESPN-U and regionally by WQTV (UPN/The Beat), carried on Murray Charter Cable Channel 10.
