The Murray State Thoroughbreds had their four-game win streak snapped this afternoon by visiting Memphis 13-6, but three 'Breds extended personal streaks in the game.
Brett Mullins got a walk in his first plate appearance, extending his on-base streak to 17 games, dating to the end of last season. Mullins has reached base in each of MSU's 15 games thus far this season. Jason Payton got a single in his first at-bat, extending his hitting streak to a team-high six games, while Seth Hudson singled in the sixth inning to extend his streak to six games as well.
Memphis (9-6) took advantage of Murray State misplays and used timely hitting to out-score the 'Breds 10-4 over the last four innings.
The Tigers got out to a 3-0 lead, scoring three unearned runs, when Murray State (5-10) responded in the fifth inning. Mullins led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch, then Hudson was hit by a pitch. Lincoln Kent hit a two-out single to score Mullins and move Hudson to second, then Chaz Ebert got an infield single to load the bases. Tyler Owen walked in Hudson to cut the Memphis lead to 3-2.
Memphis scored four runs in the sixth inning, but MSU got one back in the seventh when Payton led off by getting hit by a pitch, then went to second on a wild pitch. He went to third base on a groundout, then scored on another groundout to narrow the gap to 7-3.
The Tigers exploded for six runs in the eighth inning, but Murray State would not go quietly. In the bottom of the eighth, Justin Yount led off with a walk, and Hudson hit a one-out single, moving Yount to third. Tyler Pittman reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Yount, then Payton singled, moving Pittman to third. Kent popped a double to left field, scoring Pittman and Payton to close the scoring at 13-6.
“I thought we came into this game ready to play,” said MSU head coach Rob McDonald. “There weren't any (fielding) crimes of our guys not being ready. We had some plays in the field that we did not make, but they were tough plays. One was we were eaten up by a ground ball, but not because we sat back. We hit pretty decent today. It was just one of those games where the other team got more timely hits.”
Owen had a co-game-high three hits in the game, including a double. Kent had two hits, including a double, and drove in three runs, while Hudson, Payton and Ebert each had two hits. Payton scored two runs to lead MSU.
Memphis was led by Adam Amar, who went 3-for-5 with two runs. Michael Murray had two hits, three runs and two runs batted in. K.K. Chalmers had a triple for the Tigers, while Bill Moss had a double.
In the field, first baseman Michal Perconte had five putouts, while third baseman Owen and shortstop Yount each had a game-high four assists. For Memphis, first baseman Amar had seven putouts, while Moss had three assists at second base and third base.
On the mound, starter Daniel Calhoun (1-1) took the loss for Murray State, allowing six runs (three earned) on five hits, striking out three and walking four in 5-1/3 innings. Jamie Leidolf came on in the sixth, allowing one run on two hits in two-thirds of an inning. Anthony Stacy pitched the seventh inning, facing the minimum three batters, while Will Lawrence came on in the eighth, allowing six runs on two hits, walking two in two-thirds of an inning. Ed Baust finished the eighth, allowing two hits in one-third of an inning, while Charlie Wade pitched the ninth inning, striking out two and walking one.
For Memphis, Drew Jaudon (2-0) got the win in relief, allowing one run on three hits, walking one in two innings. Lance Scoggins started for the Tigers, allowing two runs on five hits, striking out five and walking two in 4-2/3 innings. Matt Yokley came on in the seventh, allowing three runs on three hits, striking out one and walking one in one inning of work, while Dusty Davis came on in the eighth, allowing three hits and striking out two in 1-1/3 innings.
