
'Breds' Errors Lead To 16-4 Loss

The Murray State Thoroughbreds made five errors that led to 10 unearned runs in their 16-4 loss at Ohio Valley Conference rival Tennessee Tech.
Tennessee Tech (16-29, 9-9 OVC) scored two runs in the first inning, but Murray State (15-30, 6-12 OVC) responded in the second. Jason Payton led off with a walk, then moved to second on a single by Brett Wilson. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Tyler Owen, then Payton scored on a groundout to cut the Tech lead to 2-1.
The Golden Eagles plated three more runs in the bottom of the second, then another in the fifth before the 'Breds scored again in the sixth.
Tyler Pittman led off the inning with a double, then went to third on a groundout. Wilson walked, then Owen doubled to right to score Pittman and move Wilson to third. Wilson scored on a groundout, moving Owen to third, then Owen scored on a single by Yount to cut the TTU lead to 6-4. Tennessee Tech scored two runs in the seventh inning, then had an eight-run eighth inning, with all of those runs being unearned, for the final score of 16-4.
Daniel Calhoun (2-5, 1-2 OVC) took the loss for MSU, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits, walking two in 1-1/3 innings.Marc Harmon came on in the second inning, allowing two runs on four hits, striking out three and walking three in 4-2/3 innings. West Harris entered in the seventh, allowing nine unearned runs on seven hits, striking out one in 1-2/3 innings, while Jon Newton entered in the eighth inning and struck out the only batter he faced.
Matt Kearney (2-2) got the win for Tennessee Tech, allowing four runs on six hits, striking out three and walking two in 5-2/3 innings. Adam Cloar came on in the sixth to get his first save of the season, allowing no runs on three hits, striking out one and walking one in 3-1/3 innings.
Pittman went 3-for-5 in the game with a double and a run scored, while Austin Swain had two runs batted in. Owen had a double for Murray State.
Matt Mihoci, Brian Sprowl and Scott Dunham each had three hits and scored three runs for the Golden Eagles, while Steve Soper had a home run and five RBIs.
In the field, catcher Payton had six putouts, while three players each had one assist. For Tennessee Tech, first baseman Brantley Kilgore had 13 putouts, while second baseman Mihoci and third baseman Sprowl each had four assists.
Murray State plays its final regular-season non-conference game of the season at Louisville on Wednesday at 5 p.m. CT.
