Samford Gets By Murray State Men's Tennis 4-3

Murray State University's men's tennis team fell to Samford University, 4-3, today at KenLake State Resort Park in Aurora, Ky. The match began outdoors at the Bennie Purcell Tennis Courts after the weather cleared this afternoon, but another round of thunderstorms pushed the match indoors. MSU falls to 5-8 on the season and 3-2 in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Bulldogs move to 9-7 overall and 5-2 in league play.

Each team earned a win in the first two doubles matches. Murray State's Fadi Zamjaoui and Dmytro Hryhorash beat Bradley Weaver and Renan Silveira at number one doubles 8-6. Samford's Stuart Misner and Hank Grant defeated Nicholas Ksiezopolski and Yuri Pompeu, 8-6, at number two doubles.

The decisive match for the doubles point went to the tiebreaker where James Bryce and Johnny Griffee edged Hunter Gerlach and Jeff Lester, 9-8, to give Samford the doubles point.

The Bulldogs went up 2-0 when Weaver finished off Pompeu in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-2, at number four singles. The Racers tied it up at 2-2 after Zamjaoui beat Silveira, 6-4 and 6-4, at number one singles and Hryhorash took out Grant, 6-2 and 6-4, at number two singles.

Samford claimed victories in the next two singles matches to grab the team win. Misner beat Ksiezopolski, 6-1 and 6-4, at number three singles and Griffee clinched it for the Bulldogs when he ended Lester's eight-match winning streak with a 6-1 and 6-4 victory at number six singles.

Gerlach's 6-4 and 7-6 win at number five singles over Brian Dushock set the final score at 4-3.

The Racers will face Jacksonville State University on Saturday at 11 a.m. The match is scheduled to be held at the Bennie Purcell Tennis Courts on the MSU campus.
