The Murray State University men's tennis team had a strong showing at the 79th Paducah Sun Open as three players advanced to the semifinals, with senior Hunter Gerlach capturing the championship.
Gerlach, who played at No. 3 singles during the 2007 spring season, was familiar with his semifinal opponent as he faced teammate Yuri Pompeu. Gerlach was able to outlast his teammate 7-5, 6-2 to advance to the finals.
In the finals, Gerlach would square off against his doubles partner from 2007, Chris Horton. Horton advanced to the finals with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Chris Leeper. The two players were even in the first set before Gerlach outlasted Horton in a tiebreaker 7-6 (2), before taking the second set 6-3.
"I am very excited about the way the guys played last week, especially in front of the local crowd," said head coach Mel Purcell. "All the guys were able to get out in a tournament environment and be very competitive."
