Rifle Ties For First At Jacksonville State

The Murray State rifle team tied for first place in the seven-team Gamecock Invitational, held Sunday at Jacksonville, Ala.
The Racers shot a 2301 out of a possible 2400 in air rifle and a 2278 out of a possible 2400 in smallbore for an aggregate (combined) score of 4579. Host Jacksonville State fired a 2325 in air rifle and a 2254 in smallbore for an aggregate of 4579.
Missisippi had a 2308 in air rifle and a 2217 in smallbore for an aggregate of 4525, while Tennessee Tech had a 2243 in air rifle and a 2272 in smallbore for an aggregate of 4515 and Memphis had a 2264 in air rifle and a 2176 in smallbore for an aggregate of 2440. Mercer competed in air rifle only and finished with an 1814, while Alabama-Birmingham also competed in air rifle only and shot an 1811.
For Murray State, Kevin Witbrodt shot a 585 out of a possible 600 in air rifle and a 570 out of a possible 600 in smallbore for an aggregate of 1155. Cameron Hicks fired a 575 in air rifle and a 579 in smallbore for an aggregate of 1154, while Dan Belluzzo shot a 573 in air rifle and a 576 in smallbore for an aggregate of 1149. Harley Jette fired a 568 in air rifle, while Kasey Meyer shot a 553 in smallbore to round out the Racers' scores.
Hicks led all 29 collegiate shooters in smallbore with his 579, while Belluzzo was second at 576. Witbrodt was fourth at 570. Jette, shooting as an individual in smallbore, also scored a 570 to tie for fourth.
Witbrodt's 585 in air rifle placed him in fourth out of the 40 shooters in air rifle. Hicks placed ninth with his 575.
With this tournament, Murray State closes out the fall portion of its schedule. The Racers will next compete on Jan. 20 at the Newkirk Invitational in Cookeville, Tenn.
