Samford Comes From Behind To Edge Racer Women's Tennis

Murray State's women's tennis team swept all three doubles matches but Samford University came back to win the final four singles matches to pull out a 4-3 victory today in Birmingham, Ala. The Racers drop to 3-5 on the season and 0-1 in Ohio Valley Conference play. Samford moves to 5-2 overall and 4-0 against conference opponents.

Murray State jumped out to a quick start by winning all three doubles matches. Anna and Rachael Lask opened with an 8-5 win over Sarah McKey and Emily White at No. 1 doubles. Lyndsay Ottosen and Casady Pruitt took out Anna Jackson and Whitnie Warren, 8-7, at No. 2 doubles. A pair of freshmen, Lynsey Bochenek and Angela McGahee, completed the sweep for the Racers with an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles.

Wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles left Murray State just one point away from clinching the match. Anna Lask improved to 7-1 in singles play during the spring season with a straight set, 6-4 and 6-2, victory over Jackson at No. 1 singles.

Rachael Lask edged McMiller in three sets at No. 2 singles. Lask won the first set 7-5 before McMiller came back to take the second set in a tiebreaker. The third set went to a tiebreaker as well but Lask held on for the win.

White began to turn things around for Samford with a 6-2 and 6-4 victory at No. 3 singles over Pruitt.

After McGahee won the first set 6-0 over Warren at No. 4 singles, the Racers were just one set away from the team victory. The second set went to a tiebreaker and Warren pulled it out to force a third set. The Samford player took the decisive set 6-2.

McKey and Bethany Benson earned wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively, to give Samford the victory.

The Racers will have a chance to even their conference record on Sunday when they face Jacksonville State, in Jacksonville, Ala., at 10 a.m.
