
'Breds Swept In Home Twinbill By Indiana State

The Murray State Thoroughbreds battled visiting Indiana State to a 5-1 loss in the first game of a double-header on Saturday, then saw the Sycamores plate 12 runs in the third inning of a 20-2 second game. The first game was a pitcher's duel, as the Sycamores (7-7) brought out its ace, Ryan Tatusko, who sports a 1.26 earned-run average. For the 'Breds (3-13), junior right-hander Lucas Allen was up to the task, as he allowed three earned runs on nine hits, striking out two and walking none in seven innings. Neither team allowed a walk throughout the game.
ISU held a 1-0 lead through six innings, but was finally able to get some offense against Allen in the seventh, plating three runs to take a 4-0 lead. The Sycamores also added a run in the eighth inning.
In the ninth, Murray State was able to score, as senior second baseman Seth Hudson led off with a single, then went to second on a wild pitch. Senior center fielder Tyler Pittman hit a one-out single, scoring Hudson from second to close out the scoring at 5-1.
Hudson and Pittman each had two hits, garnering all four of MSU's hits in the game. Defensively, senior first baseman James Akin had eight putouts, while sophomore third baseman Tyler Owen had four assists.
For Indiana State, four batters had two hits apiece, while Ryan Strausborger scored two runs. First baseman Marcus Artner had 12 putouts, while second baseman Strausborger had seven assists.
On the mound, Allen (0-2) took the loss, throwing only 88 pitches (62 for strikes) in his seven innings. Junior righty Drew Leeper came on in the eighth, allowing one run on three hits in one inning. Freshman left-hander Bryan Baldini closed out the game for the 'Breds, allowing one hit and striking out one in one inning.
For the Sycamores, Tatusko (3-1) got the win, allowing one run on four hits, striking out eight and walking none in 8-1/3 innings. Adam Lindsay got his third save of the season, throwing the last two-thirds of an inning.
In the second game, Murray State got on the scoreboard first, as freshman left fielder Chad Allen got a one-out single, then went to second on a single by Pittman. Senior designated hitter Jason Payton then popped a double to left field, scoring Chad Allen and giving MSU an early 1-0 lead.
Indiana State struck for two runs in the second inning, then unloaded for 12 runs in the third, sending 16 batters to the plate. The Sycamores added six runs in the sixth inning, then Murray State scored a run in the bottom half of the inning before the game was called due to darkness.
Pittman and Chad Allen had four of MSU's five hits in the game, with Chad Allen getting a double and Pittman legging out his first triple of the season. Defensively, sophomore catcher Daniel Miller had six putouts, while Hudson had three assists.
For Indiana State, Brett Siegmund went 4-for-4 with two doubles, four runs scored and five runs batted in. Chris Schmidt went 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Josh Abercrombie scored three runs, while Ryan Bond had three RBIs. Defensively, catcher John Feltner had six putouts, while three fielders each had one assist.
On the mound, junior right-hander Mike Perconte (1-3) took the loss, allowing 11 runs on 11 hits, striking out two and walking two in 2-2/3 innings. Senior lefty Jon Newton came on in the third inning, allowing three runs on one hit and walking two. Baldini entered in the third inning, allowing four runs on three hits, striking out four and walking four in 2-2/3 innings, while senior righty Charlie Wade closed out the game for MSU, allowing two runs on one hit and walking one in two-thirds of an inning.
For ISU, Ryan Hayes (2-1) got the win, allowing one run on three hits, striking out two and walking one in two innings. Josh Varno entered in the third, allowing two hits and striking out four in three innings. Nathan Inman closed out the game for the Sycamores, allowing one run on no hits, striking out one and walking three in one inning.
