The Murray State Thoroughbreds avoided a series sweep by visiting Southeast Missouri State by winning the second game of today's double-header in exciting fashion, scoring the game-winning run in the bottom of the last inning to win 6-5. The 'Breds dropped the first game of the twinbill 17-3.
In accordance with Ohio Valley Conference rules, both games of the double-header were to be seven innings, and that was just enough for MSU in Game 2.
Southeast Missouri (19-8, 5-1 OVC) broke up a scoreless tie with four runs in the top of the fourth inning, but Murray State (6-19, 3-3 OVC) responded in the bottom half of the inning when senior second baseman Seth Hudson led off with a single, then senior first baseman James Akin singled him to third. Senior catcher Jason Payton walked to load the bases, and Hudson scored when senior center fielder Tyler Pittman hit into a double play, moving Akin to third. Sophomore third baseman Tyler Owen then stepped up and hit a 1-0 pitch over the left-field fence for his third homer of the year to cut the SEMO lead to 4-3.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Redhawks added a run to push their lead to 5-3, but the 'Breds answered again when Akin hit a one-out single, then Payton walked. Pittman slapped a two-run double into left field to tie the game at 5-5.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, junior right fielder Matt Scheer led off and reached on catcher's interference. Senior designated hitter Austin Swain then walked, and both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch. Hudson then singled through the right side to score Scheer and give Murray State the 6-5 win.
"It's always good to put games like that first game behind you and come back with a vengeance," said MSU head coach Rob McDonald. "We played that last game well, and the first game of the series well yesterday. I'm proud of the way our players came back and fought to win that game."
