
'Breds Shut Out At No. 18 Mississippi

The Murray State Thoroughbreds visited No. 18 Mississippi and the Rebels were able to shut out MSU 9-0.
The 'Breds saw its longest hit streak of the season come to an end, as senior second baseman Seth Hudson went 0-for-3 after hitting safely in each of his last 13 games. MSU also was shut out for the first time in 56 games, dating to last season.
Starting pitcher Jake Donze did well, hitting a rough spot in the third inning when the Rebels scored three runs on the strength of a two-run home run by Cody Overbeck.
The 'Breds' defense had problems in the sixth inning, committing two errors that led to two unearned Rebel runs to make it 6-0. Mississippi tacked on three runs in the seventh inning to cap the scoring at 9-0.
Donze (3-4) took the loss, allowing six runs (three earned) on four hits, striking out three and walking four in six innings. Bryan Baldini came on in the seventh inning, allowing three runs on four hits, striking out one and walking one in two innings.
Scott Bittle (2-4) got the win as the first of five Mississippi pitchers. Rebel pitching and a solid defense held Murray State to singles by sophomore shortstop Justin Yount and senior catcher Jason Payton.
Murray State returns home to resume its Ohio Valley Conference schedule with a three-game weekend series against Tennessee Tech. The 'Breds will play a double-header on Saturday at 1 p.m., concluding the weries with a Sunday 1 p.m. game.
