Track and Field Finishes Fifth-Bell earns NCAA Regional Spot

The Murray State track and field team wrapped up their 2007 season Saturday, finishing the season with a fifth place showing at the Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championship in Charleston, Ill. Murray State earned 67.00 total points, while Eastern Illinois took the crown with a total of 197.00 points, 90.5 points better than second-place Tennessee State.
Freshman Pam Bell earned a trip to the NCAA Regionals with her performance in the Discus Throw, throwing 138'00" (42.06 m), which earned her first place out of the 15 competitors. As the OVC is an automatic qualifier to the NCAA championships, all event winners along with any athletes hitting NCAA Regional marks earned a trip to the upcoming NCAA Regionals set for May 25-26.
Bell becomes just the fifth individual OVC Outdoor Discus champion in MSU history, along with Wendy Atkinson (122'3" in 1991), Dawn Woodside (130'7" in 1989 and 121'1" in 1988), and Jen Oberhauser (131'11.25" in 1982).
Sophomore Olivia Joseph, one of three team captains this season, finished in fourth place in the 100 Meter Dash, with a time of 12.51, just 0.26 seconds off the leader, Shawana Smith of Eastern Illinois.
Meagan Richeson competed in the 400 Meter Hurdles, finishing in eighth place with a time of 1:06.87.
In the 800 Meter Run finals, Taylor Crawford finished in fourth place overall with a time of 2:14.44.
MSU placed two finishers in the 5000 Meter Run event, with Kristen Miller (19:35.42) and Alaina Zanin (19:39.35) finishing in 13th and 14th place, respectively.
Zanin also competed in the 10000 Meter Run with a time of 40:01.79, good enough for ninth place.
In the 4x100 Meter Relay, the MSU team consisting of Kassandra Sutzer, Joseph, Brittany Davies, and Chelsea Hosey, finished in seventh place with a time of 49.40.
In the 4x400 Meter Relay, the team of Sydney Gholston, Crawford, Sutzer, and Richeson helped Murray State to a ninth place finish, with a time of 4:01.90.
As mentioned earlier, in the Discus competition, MSU's Bell took the crown, with a toss of 138'00" (42.06 m), besting the other 14 competitors. Shameka Dial took fourth place with a toss of 132'11" (40.52 m), while Laura Schroeder (118'05"; 36.10 m) took seventh place. Dominique Robinson finished in ninth place with a toss of 115'00" (35.05 m).
In the High Jump, Josha Rogers tied for second place with a jump of 5'05.00" (1.65 m). Maggie McKay finished in fourth place with a jump of 5'03.00" (1.60 m), and Hosey (5'03.00"; 1.60 m) finished with a tie for fifth place. Lindsay Rich also competed in this event for MSU, tying for ninth place with a jump of 5'01.00" (1.55 m).
Schroeder (91'05"; 27.86 m), Rachel Haley (88'05"; 26.96 m) and Felicia Hargis (81"01.25"; 24.72 m) all competed in the Javelin event for the Racers.
Sophomore Andreye' Payne finished 11th place with a jump of 16'07.75" (5.07 m) in the Long Jump, and Sutzer (16'05.00"; 5.00 m) finished in 13th place in the event. Hosey finished with a jump of 16'02.25" (4.93 m), good for a 15th place finish.
Alicia Tempel (10'11.75"' 3.35 m) was the only Racer to compete in the Pole Vault, tying for fourth place.
MSU placed four finishers in the Shot Put, with MSU placing three in the top five finishers. Dial finished in second place with a throw of 44'00.75" (13.43 m), and Robinson took third place with a throw of 43'11.25" (13.39 m). Bell took fifth with a throw of 41'10.00" (12.75 m). Hargis also competed in this event for the Racers, finishing with a throw of 34'10.25" (10.62 m).
Payne finished the day for the Racers with a 33'06.75" (10.23 m) finish in the Triple Jump.
