The Murray State Racers have the longest winning streak in the Ohio Valley Conference right now with six straight wins after posting an 81-67 victory over Tennessee Tech Thursday' at the Regional Special Events Center. The Racers meet Southeast Missouri State Saturday at 2 p.m. in a game that will be televised by ESPN2. MSU got a pair of 21-point scoring performances from senior Bruce Carter and junior Tyler Holloway against Tech and ended with an impressive performance from start to finish in improving to 11-7 overall and 7-3 in the Ohio Valley Conference.
The Racers and Redhawks have a history that dates back to 1931 and have one of the best rivalries in the OVC since SEMO joined the league in 1991. MSU leads the all-time series with the Redhawks 42-16 and are 19-8 at home. MSU leads the all-time series with the Redhawks in OVC games 29-7. The teams split their series last season with each winning on the road. The Racers current six-game winning streak started at Southeast Jan. 7 with a 79-51 win. They have met twice in the OVC Tournament championship game. In 1999, the Racers defeated the Redhawks on Aubrey Reese's memorable buzzer beater 62-61 to send MSU to the NCAA for a third straight year. One year later in 2000, the Redhawks beat Murray State 67-56 to make the big dance.
The Racers are still in control of a rare four-pack of stat categories in the OVC. In league games, MSU leads in field goal percentage (.495), and three-point percentage (.424) and in defense of those categories, FG defense (.414) and three-point defense (.322). After their 16-of-20 performance from the line against TTU, the Racers are also first in league free throw shooting at .754.
In the last NCAA stat check, MSU rocketed to 19th in the nation in overall field goal percentage.
