Lyon College is an NAIA program that competes in the TransSouth Athletic Conference and coached by Kevin Jenkins who is in his 13th season. The Scots enter the contest with a 4-1 mark after two wins over Williams Baptist 78-70 (Nov. 1) and 76-70 (Nov. 10), and an overtime win over Ecclesia 64-63 Thursday . The Scots dropped an 83-63 decision to the College of the Ozarks (Nov. 4). The Scots play Monday at Arkansas State before the Racers go to Jonesboro to play the Red Wolves on Wednesday next week.
The Racers once again have a challenging non-conference portion of their schedule. After the Wednesday game at ASU, the Racers return home Saturday, Nov. 22 to face old rival Western Kentucky in what will be the 146th meeting in their series. The Racers also have road games with Indiana State (Nov. 26) and Missouri (Dec. 13) as well as a trip to Puerto Rico (Dec. 20-22) to play South Florida, Oral Roberts, and Wright State. MSU travels to Chattanooga, Tenn. (Dec. 29) to play Niagara.
The Racers are playing their 11th opener at the RSEC and are 10-0 including a 66-65 win over Rider last season. MSU is opening the program's 84th season and are 49-11 since 1948 in season openers. The Racers have won 18 straight home openers since their last loss to Southern Illinois 114-108 in triple overtime in 1989. MSU has won 12 of their last 14 season openers with the only two losses coming to Cincinnati in 2005 and San Diego State in 2006. The Racers have hit the century mark 11 times in winning efforts since 1948 in home openers, but haven't hit the 100-point mark since a 100-61 win over West Florida in 2001.
