Women's Tennis Drops 4-2 Decision to Memphis

The Murray State woen's tennis team battled Memphis down to the wire before dropping a 4-2 decision Tuesday afternoon at the Kenlake Tennis Center. The loss dropped the Racers to 4-2 on the season.
MSU jumped out to the early 1-0 lead as they swept all three doubles matches. Lyndsay Ottosen and Alexis Webb got the victories started with a quick 8-3 victory at No. 2 doubles. Angela McGahee and Anne Pennington would clinch the point with a hard-fought 9-7 victory at the top spot. Lynsey Bochenek and Katelyn Fulcher closed out doubles with an victory, taking the tiebreaker 7-3.
The Tigers battled back to take a 2-1 advantage with victories at second and third singles. McGahee, a native of Memphis, Tenn., drew Ashley Murdock at No. 1 singles. The two have played numerous times growing up with niether having a decisive advantage in their head-to-head matches. Murdock took the opening set 6-0 before McGahee stormed back to take the second set 6-3. In the final set, Murdock was able to capitalize on some unforced errors from McGahee to to take the set and the match 6-1.
In the match of the day, Webb played like a seasoned veteran as she fought off a third-set comeback for the victory toeven the match 3-3. After splitting the first two sets 6-3, 3-6, Webb took a 5-2 advantage over Linsey Wiseman at No. 4 singles. Wiseman was able to battle back to take the next two games, but Webb regained her composure and sealed the victory, 6-4.
The deciding match came at No. 6 singles as Adriana Alvarez dropped a second-set tiebreaker in falling 3-6, 6-7 (7-5) to Kristin Chamberlain.
The match between Ottosen and Ekin Zafir at No. 5 singles was not finished. Ottosen was ahead 6-1, 6-7 (7-5), 2-1 when the match was suspended.
The Racers return to the court on Feb. 29 when they take on IUPUI. First serve is set for 4 p.m. in Paducah.
