Jones, Yamamuro Bring Home OVC Weekly Honors

Senior Emi Yamamuro and freshman Katelyn Jones were honored by the Ohio Valley Conference today, as Yamamuro was named OVC Field Athlete of the Week and Jones was named OVC Track Athlete of the Week.
The Racers competed at the Bulldog Invitational last weekend in Starkville, Miss., winning four events and breaking two more school records, making that nine records that have been broken by the 2008 Racers so far this season.
Jones, who was named as Track Athlete of the Week for the second time this season, broke the school record in the 3000 meter steeplechase, winning the event with a time of 10:59.14. This was the fifth school record that Jones has been a part of so far this season.
Yamamuro took first place in the javelin throw, with a toss of 45.71 meters (150-00 feet), automatically qualifying her for the NCAA regionals. Yamamuro's toss was also a school record, besting the 141-4 throw by Kylee Lyon in 1999.
Both Jones' and Yamamuro's numbers are the best in the OVC in their respective events (steeplechase and javelin throw) so far in the 2008 outdoor season.
This marks only the second time in school history that Murray State has had both the OVC track and field athletes of the week for the same week, with the first time happening earlier this season when Jones and Shameka Dial won the honor for the week ending Feb. 3.
The Racers resume action on April 4-5, when they will travel to Cape Girardeau, Mo. for the Gatorade Classic.
