The Murray State track and field team held their own against big competition at the Louisiana State University Alumni Gold meet in Baton Rouge, La. Saturday.

Continuing to be strong competitors for the Racers, seniors Emi Yamamuro and Shameka Dial lead the team by both placing fifth in javelin and shot put, respectively. Yamamuro threw another regional qualifying distance of 143'1” (43.62m), while Dial had a great day in shot put with a throw of 44'2 ¾” (13.48m). Also in shot put, Lindi Berry placed 13th with a throw of 35” 11¼” (10.95m).

In the 5000 meter run, Asenath NaAmen ran a personal best time of 18:28.61 and placed sixth. Teammates Alaina Zanin and Kristin Reffett took 11th with a18:55.78 and 18th with a time of 19:47.01.

In the 1500 meter run, freshman Katelyn Jones, coming off a heel injury, placed 10th with a time of 4:55.02. She said she was glad to be back running and is ready to tune up for the steeple chase before the conference tournament.

In the 800 meter run, Taylor Crawford had a good day, placing 19th with a time of 2:16.82 in a field of professional athletes from all over the world.

Holding down the 400 meter hurdles was Meagan Richeson, who placed 16th with a personal best time of 1:04.74.

Freshman sprinters Audris Williams and Amber Mills, sophomore Brittany Davies, and junior Olivia Joseph all had outstanding performances in a strong field of competitors. In the 100 meter dash the first 12 competitors ran regional qualifying times. Williams and Joseph took 36th with a time of 12.39 seconds and 47th with a time of 12.75 seconds, respectively.

In the open 400 meter dash, Mills and Davies had great personal times with 59.02 and 1:00.00, respectively. Mills and Davies also competed in the 200 meter dash and ran times of 26.33 and 26.84, respectively.

Head Coach Dereck Chavis said he was pleased with how the team competed against this high level of competition and ready to see what the team as a whole can do at the Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Cape Girardeau, Mo. on May 2 and 3.
