Men's Tennis Falls to Tennessee-Martin, 5-2

The Murray State men's tennis team got off to a hot start by winning the doubles flight today against Tennessee-Martin at Purcell Courts, but UTM got the momentum back in the singles flight and won the match 5-2.

For the Racers (1-12, 1-6 Ohio Valley Conference), the intensity picked up after they lost the first doubles set, in which UTM's Alfredo Krywacz and Christian Slabbert defeated MSU's Nicholas Ksiezopolski and Yuri Pompeu, 8-3, at No. 2. Murray State then started a rally, as the team of Chris Horton and Hunter Gerlach defeated Tennessee-Martin's Stephan Bruwer and Andrey Yesipov at No. 1, 8-3. The MSU duo of Mason Johnson and Jadir Semensin then capped off the rally and ensured the doubles flight victory with a thrilling 9-7 win over the Skyhawks' Petr Markov and Matthew Harris at No. 3.

Tennessee-Martin (6-10, 4-4 OVC) seemed to capture all the momentum during singles competition, taking five of the six sets. At No. 3, Horton was defeated 6-2, 6-2, by Krywacz, while Bruwer took out Pompeu at No. 1, 6-2, 6-1. UTM's Slabbert defeated Ksiezopolski at No. 4, 6-2, 6-2, while Markov scored a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Mike Headford at No. 5. Semensin gave MSU their lone singles victory, winning 6-3, 6-1 against Harris at No. 6, and the match was concluded when Yesipov defeated Gerlach, 2-6, 6-0, 10-3 at No. 2.

The Racers next match is at home for an OVC match against Eastern Illinois on April 11, which will also be Senior Day for seniors Gerlach, Horton, Ksiezopolski, and Pompeu. The match will start at 2:30 p.m.
