The Murray State baseball team gave up three runs in the top of the eighth inning and fell 5-2 to Arkansas State in the final non-conference game of the season Tuesday afternoon at Johnny Reagan Field.
The Indians (20-31-1) got on the board in the first inning as Brandon Eller singled to center with two outs and stole second. Ryan Hudgins followed by blooping a double into no-man's land in right center to score the runner from second.
The 'Breds (20-28) were able to tie the score in the second Cory Hodskins singled up the middle and Matt Hon drew a walk. After an unsuccessful sacrifice bunt, Taylor Thieke drove in a runner from second with a single to center field.
The ASU duo of Eller and Hudgins were back at it in the third as Eller doubled into the gap in left center and scored on Hudgins' single up the middle.
MSU tied the score again in the third as Kyle Tiernan started the inning with a base on balls before scoring from third on a Hodskins' two-out single to right field.
The Indians pushed across three runs in the top of the eighth as Eller walked and Hudgins doubled inside the bag at third to put runners on second and third with no outs. Guy Brown followed with a fielder's choice grounder to second, but the throw home was high and allowed the runner to slide under the tag. MSU was able to erase on Hudgins on the play as he was caught between second and third on the play. Brown moved to second on the play before a passed ball moved him to third and a wild pitch allowed him to score. A walk and a single put two runners on and the 'Breds attempt at turning a double play was not in time and Lawson Hipps was able to hustle around and score from second on the play.
Jett Jones (2-8) picked up the victory as he gave up two runs on eight hits and seven strikeouts over 7.2 innings. Jake Donze (1-6) took the loss as he gave up three runs, one earned, on two hits and two walks in one inning. Jordan Kimball (1) earned the save by striking out all four hitters he faced.
Thieke led the 'Breds offense with three hits.
The 'Breds return to the diamond on Friday, May 16 as they open a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series at Austin Peay. The doubleheader will get underway at 4:30 p.m.
