The Murray State Rifle squad battled Kentucky Saturday at the Pat Spurgin Range in a match-up of No. 8 vs. No. 2 in the national rankings.
The Racers lost the smallbore portion of the shoulder-to-shoulder match by 27 points and the air rifle segment by 43 points as Kentucky took the match by the final score of 4674-4604.
MSU Head Coach Alan Lollar was pleased with the way his team competed, especially considering UK posted the best score of the year in NCAA D-I.
"I'm proud of the effort we gave and once again we have improved over the last score we shot," Lollar said. "Our team will continue to train hard and hopefully we're ready to take the next step up. UK has a great team."
MSU's 4604 marked a season high in topping the 4602 they posted Oct. 3 at the Ole Miss Invitational.
Individually, Emily Quiner led the Racers in smallbore with a score of 582 (out of a possible 600), while Kasey Meyer added a 577. Ashley Rose carded a 569, with Daniel Sojka posting a 561.
Sojka led MSU in air rifle at 583, with Meyer posting 581. Quiner finished at 578 with Rose at 571.
"Emily had a really good smallbore day with a 582, and the rest of the team supported that well," Lollar added. "Daniel Sojka shot well for us in air rifle."
Quiner had the top aggregate score for the Racers at 1160, two shots ahead of Meyer. Sojka had an 1144, with Rose posting 1142.
The Racers faced their biggest test in the early part of the 2009-10 season.
MSU hits the road for a Saturday Ohio Valley Conference match at Morehead State and returns home Nov. 7 to host Texas Christian.
