The Murray State volleyball team earned a 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-21) victory over Tennessee State in Nashville, Tenn. The Racers are now 12-16 overall and 11-6 in the Ohio Valley Conference this season. MSU has one more regular-season match, Saturday, Nov. 14 against Austin Peay to help determine their seed in the 2009 OVC Tournament, Nov. 19-21.
The Racers were led by sophomore Lydia Orf and sophomore Kayleah Sauer led the Racers defensively, with 14 digs each.
“Our hitters are doing exactly what we want of them at the end of the season,” said head coach David Schwepker. “They are getting more comfortable with their setter and are improving with each match. That is what every coach likes to see at the end of the season.”
The Racers opened up the first set with a 5-0 run and never allowed the Lady Tigers to get into the set. The closest that TSU came to leveling the score was a 5-2 mark. MSU pushed its lead to as many as 10 points and earned the 25-18 win. The Lady Tigers did get some momentum going to end the set, as they held off three set-points.
TSU then opened the second set with a 2-0 run before the Racers regrouped and tied the set at three. The Lady Tigers managed to keep MSU from taking control of the scoreboard by regaining the lead with a 4-1 run to take an 8-4 advantage. The Racers kept fighting through the set and slowly cut the lead to two (17-15) and then went on a 7-3 run to take the lead for the first time in the set, 22-20. MSU then allowed the Lady Tigers to tally just one more point in the set to take the 25-21 win into the intermission.
“The team is playing well and they did a great job tonight as a team,” Schwepker said. “TSU had us in the second set and the team kept its composure to fight back and pull out the win.”
The third set was a back-and-forth battle at the beginning, with the Racers holding a small one or two-point lead after earning the first two points of the set. TSU was not done fighting and forced a tie score at seven and then took its first lead of the set, 9-8. The teams traded the next 12 points before MSU earned the first lead of the set larger than two points. The score was knotted at 13 when the Racers started a 3-0 run for the 16-13 advantage. TSU earned the next two points, but that was as close as MSU allowed the Lady Tigers to get the rest of the set on its way to a 25-21 victory.
The Racers now travel to Clarksville, Tenn., to face the Lady Govs at 2 p.m. at the Dunn Center. The match will help determine what seed the MSU will get in the OVC Tournament, which could be third or fourth depending on the outcome of all the matches across the league.
Notes: Senior Kelli Johnson earned her third start of the year and her first since Oct. 6 against Lipscomb.
