In what was billed as one of the top pitching matchups in the Ohio
Valley Conference this season, Murray State left hander Daniel Calhoun
tossed his third complete game of the season in leading the 'Breds to a
3-2 victory over Jacksonville State in the second game of a
doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Reagan Field.
Calhoun (5-0) allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits and nine strikeouts. He did not walk a batter in lowering his season ERA to 1.54. He set the side down in order in the second, third, sixth and seventh innings.
JSU starter Ben Tootle (2-1) was equally impressive as he struck out 13 in the complete-game loss. He surrendered three runs on six hits and three walks.
The 'Breds (14-6, 1-1 OVC) got on the board in the second inning as Jonathan Craycraft continued to swing a hot bat with a single to right field. Bryan Propst followed with a double to right field to put two runners in scoring position. Daniel Miller drove in Craycraft with a sacrifice fly to right field before Elliot Frey delivered an RBI double into the gap in right center.
MSU added to its lead in the third as Wes Cunningham beat out a bunt base hit and stole second. Jason Laws drove in Cunningham with a single to right field.
The Gamecocks (12-8, 1-1 OVC) pushed across two runs in the fifth as a hit-by-pitch was followed by an RBI double from Heath Wall. After a 'Breds fielding error, the second run scored on a 4-6-3 double play.
Craycraft led the MSU offense by going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
The two teams will play the rubber game of the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
