Jacksonville State took advantage of a pair of early errors from
MurrayState to push across five unearned runs over the first three
innings in handing the 'Breds a 14-3 defeat in the third game of a
three-game series Sunday afternoon at Reagan Field.
The Gamecocks (13-8, 2-1 OVC) came out swinging in the first inning as they collected six hits and pushed across four runs. Blake Seguin started the rally with a one-out single to left field, extending his hit streak to 19 games. Steven Leach plated Seguin with a double into the gap in left center. Jake Welch followed with an RBI single to right field and Kyle Bluestein ripped an RBI double to straight-away center field. Heath Wall drove in the fourth run with a single up the middle.
JSU took advantage of a 'Breds miscue in the field to push across four unearned runs in the second inning. The error allowed a run to score from third before Daniel Adamson delivered a three-run home run to left field.
JSU pushed across another run in the third as Spencer Brandes doubled to left center and scored on Jake Sharrock's single to right field.
The 'Breds (14-7, 1-2 OVC) finally got on the board in the seventh as Tyler Owen singled to right center and came around to score when Jason Laws fly ball to deep center field was dropped and the relay throw landed in the JSU dugout. Bryan Propst followed two batters later with an RBI single through the left side.
The Gamecocks added to the lead in the eighth on a three-run home run from Sam Eberle.
MSU got a run back in the bottom of the inning as Wes Cunningham singled through the left side and scored on Owen's double to center field.
Austin Lucas (3-1) picked up the victory after allowing just two unearned runs on four hits and five strikeouts over seven innings. Dan Huff (3-1) took the loss after giving up five runs, four earned, on seven hits in one-plus inning.
Owen led the 'Breds by going 3-for-4. Propst added a pair of hits and an RBI.
The 'Breds return to action March 25 with a doubleheader against Mid-Continent. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. at Reagan Field.
