Murray State's second comeback bid in as many innings came up short as SIU Edwardsville rallied with four runs in the top of the seventh and avoided a three-game sweep with an 11-9 victory in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Reagan Field.
SIU (5-14) got the big blow in the seventh as Michael Hopkins delivered a three-run triple to center field. Mike Hurt followed by depositing an RBI double to right field to give the Cougars the two-run lead.
The 'Breds (18-8) did not go quietly as Kyle Tiernan singled to left field with one out. Zach Noonan followed with a single to left field and Wes Cunningham walked to load the bases. A pop up to first and a flyout to center field ended the MSU rally and the game, thus halting a four-game winning streak.
The Cougars got on the board in the first as Josh Street hit a solo home run to left field, his eighth of the season.
The 'Breds got on the board in the second as Tyler Owen drew a one-out walk and went to third on a Bryan Propst single up the middle. After a wild pitch moved Propst to second, Daniel Miller delivered a two-run double to right center.
SIUE regained the lead in the third as Mitch Matecki delivered an RBI double to left and scored on Chase Thrasher's single up the middle. Dustin Brooks would later plate the third run of the inning with a single back through the box.
MSU got a run back in the home-half of the inning as Noonan doubled to left center and scored on Daniel Hill's single through the right side.
The Cougars extended their lead in the fourth as Matecki delivered an RBI infield single and Street later drove in a run with a fielder's choice.
SIUE added an insurance run in the sixth as Michael Hopkins doubled to right center and scored when Hurt followed with a double off the fence in center field.
The 'Breds put together a huge-sixth inning to push across six runs and take their first lead of the game. Bryan Propst started the inning by being hit by a pitch before a balk and wild pitch moved him to third. Miller walked and Elliot Frey lined a ball off the umpire to load the bases. Noonan plated two runs with a double to left field. After an intentional walk to Cunningham, Hill drove in a pair of runs with a single through the left side. Tyler Owen drove in the fifth run on a fielding error and Propst closed out the scoring with an RBI single up the middle.
Noonan paced the 'Breds by going 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored. Hill collected two hits and drove in three, while Propst and Miller each added two hits. Cunningham was 1-for-3 with a pair of walks, extending his hit streak to 17 games.
Bradley Cobb (0-1) took the loss after giving up four runs on three hits in one-third of an inning. Brian Lorenz (1-0) picked up the victory after allowing no runs on three hits over 1.2 innings.
The 'Breds return to the diamond Tuesday afternoon as they travel to take on Southern Illinois. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
