Murray State junior-to-be Jadir Semensin was named to the 2009 Arhtur Ashe Sports Scholar Men's Tennis First Team by Diverse Issues in Higher Education magazine. Semensin was not the only Racer honored as Adriana Alvarez (women's tennis), Amber Mills (women's track and field) and Jasmyne Thornton (women's basketball) were named to the third team, while Aseneth Na'Aman (women's track and field) was named to the fourth team and Angela McGahee (women's tennis) earned honorable mention recognition.
Diverse Issues In Higher Education established the Sports Scholars Awards to honor undergraduate students of color who have made achieving both academically and athletically a winning combination. Inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr.'s commitment to education as well as his love for the game of tennis, they invite every college and university in the country to participate in this annual awards program by nominating their outstanding sports scholars. In addition to their athletic ability, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars must exhibit academic excellence and community activism.
To be included, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport; maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2, and be active on their campuses or in their communities.
“It is nice to have these student-athletes recognized for more than just their accomplishments in athletics,” said associate athletic director for internal operations Matt Kelly. “The award shows that the student-athletes are well rounded and working hard in all areas of life.”
Semensin (Guarulhos, Brazil) was one of 10 players named to the men's tennis first team after posting a 4.00 GPA during the fall and spring semesters while majoring in business. On the court, Semensin posted an 8-9 record in singles action and was 8-9 in doubles action.
Alvarez (Durango, Mexico) was honored for the second time after posting a 3.5 GPA during both semesters while majoring in accounting. She was also named to the second team in 2007. On the court, Alvarez compiled a 6-15 record in singles and was 15-11 during doubles play.
Mills (Carbondale, Ill.) earned third-team distinction after posting a 3.56 GPA in the fall and a 3.63 GPA in the spring while majoring in biology. Mills placed eighth in the 400-meters at the 2009 Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championships.
Thornton (LaGrange, Ga.) earned a 3.42 GPA in the spring in engineering physics. Thornton helped the Racers capture their first regular-season championship as she averaged 0.3 points and 0.8 rebounds.
Na'Aman, a nutrition major from Jefferson City, Mo., recorded a 3.8 GPA in the fall and a 3.52 GPA in the spring. She scored points at both the indoor and outdoor OVC Championships as she placed seventh indoors and eighth outdoors in the 3000-meters.
