9/26/2009 9:30:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
The last time the Murray State volleyball team and Tennessee Tech battled each other in the Eblen Center was in the championship match of the 2008 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament. While the Golden Eagles (3-11, 3-2 OVC) earned the win again today, the Racers (2-12, 2-3 OVC) forced the final set into extra points before falling 2-3 (25-17, 23-25, 23-25, 25-20, 14-16).
MSU had three players record double-digit kill totals, with junior Becca Lamb leading the way with 17. Lamb also came up big at the net defensively for the Racers, with a career-best nine total blocks (1-8). Fellow junior Ashley Nenninger added 16 and sophomore Mary Cunningham had a strong performance for the Racers, with a .500 (8k-1e-14ta) attack percentage.
For the first time this season MSU also saw double-digit digs performances from four players. Sophomore Kayleah Sauer led the team with a season-best 29 digs. Guo added 15 and recorded her first triple-double of the season (10 kills, 52 assists, 15 digs). Nenninger added 10 digs for the second double-double of her career (16 kills, 10 digs) and freshman Lydia Orf rounded out the group with 13 digs.
The teams traded the first five serves of the set one before the Racers took the first two-point lead (4-2). MSU then kept pushing and quickly earned a six-point advantage on the scoreboard. The Racers used well balanced play through the set, earning advantages on the score sheet in both the kills and blocking columns on their way to the 25-17 win.
The Golden Eagles came out strong in the second set and built a 15-9 lead. MSU fought back with a 4-0 run (15-13) with two key blocks. TTU responded with a 3-1 run to push their advantage back out to four points. The Racers did not quit and followed with a 4-1 run to cut the deficit to one point (19-18). The Golden Eagles pushed back out with a 3-0 run, but MSU did not let up and again cut the lead to one point (23-22) with a 4-1 run. TTU then tied the match at one set a piece with a 25-23 win.
The beginning of set three looked like it would be all Golden Eagles, as the team jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and kept the lead around five points. Then MSU started to push and cut the lead to just one point (13-12) with a 6-0 run. The teams then started to trade serves and 2-0 runs to force six tie scores through the end of the set. The Golden Eagles were the first to get to 24 and earned the 25-23 win with a 2-0 run.
The Racers turned the momentum of the match around at the start of the fourth set, by claiming an early 9-1 lead. MSU used strong blocking during the span, with four total team blocks, including four block assists from Lamb. TTU then started a come-back with a 10-3 run that gave them a 14-13 advantage. Both teams then fought hard, with each earning 3-0 runs to force a 17-all tie. The Racers then took control for good with a 3-1 run that was sparked by a block solo from Lamb. The Golden Eagles got within one (21-20), but MSU closed out the set with a 4-0 run to force the fifth-and-deciding set.
The fifth set opened with the teams trading the first 12 points before either team could take a lead larger than one point. The Racers were the first to gain the key advantage and took an 8-6 lead into the side switch. The teams then renewed the battle and traded serves until the Golden Eagles tied the set at 12. The epic fight continued with ties at 13 and 14, but the Racers were unable to hold off TTU, as they claimed the 16-14 win.
Blocking was a key for MSU in the match, with a season-best 13 total team blocks. Besides Lamb's nine, the Racers got strong blocking from junior Sara Hayden (7), Cunningham (4), and Guo (4). Lamb's eight block assists is good to put her in a tie with Sarah Ernst on the block assists in a five-set match charts at MSU.
The Racers now returns to Racer Arena for two matches over the next two weeks. MSU will first faces UT Martin, Thursday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. and then host Lipscomb, Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m.
