The Murray State volleyball team will participate in two of four-straight home matches, the longest home stand of the 2010 campaign, this weekend when they welcome Southeast Missouri and Eastern Illinois to Racer Arena. The Racers will conclude the first half of the Ohio Valley Conference season when they battle with SEMO, Friday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. and will then start the second half of the OVC campaign, Saturday, Oct. 16, with a 2 p.m. match against EIU.
Scouting Southeast Missouri
The Redhawks are 5-12 overall and 2-5 in the OVC heading into this week's matches. SEMO will face UT Martin, Thursday, Oct. 14, before heading to Murray for Friday's match.
As a team, the Redhawks are hitting just .130 (746k-409e-2596) on the season, while allowing their opponents to hit at a .213 (903k-342e-2632ta) clip. The offense may not have clicked yet for SEMO, but their defense ranks in the top-10 in the NCAA. The Redhawks are averaging 18.5 digs per set, good for the 6th spot in the NCAA standings and Kelly Benacka is individually ranked No. 27 (5.31/set).
SEMO has two main hitters in Claire Keaton and Karlee Lursen. Keaton has a team-best 196 kills and 691 attempts (.172 hitting percentage). Lursen has 147 kills and a .079 (147k-105e-529ta) hitting percentage, but missed the last match. Emily Coon is the team's leader in the hitting percentage column, as the only player with a .200+ mark. Coon his hitting .209 (116k-58e-277ta) and has a team-high 59 blocks.
Against the Redhawks
A year ago, the Racers earned two, 3-1, wins over SEMO and had six players record double-digit kill totals, including four with 20+ kills. Sara Hayden lead the team with a .432 (21k-2e-44ta) hitting percentage and added nine blocks. Ashley Nenninger was the top kill producer (29), with Logan Su (25) and Becca Lamb (23) also adding over 20 kills. Kayleah Sauer was strong defensively for MSU, with 5.88 digs per set.
The Racers earned a team hitting percentage of .287 (127k-29e-342ta) against the Redhawks, while SEMO hit .225 (127k-47e-356ta). MSU also had a clear advantage in the blocking column, with 20 total blocks to 10 by the Redhawks. SEMO's only advantage came in the service ace column at 2-8.
The top returners for the Redhawks are Claire Keaton and Emily Hughes. Keaton tallied 32 kills and a .256 (32k-10e-86ta) hitting percentage against the Racers. Hughes added 17 kills and six blocks.
The Series
The Redhawks have a 42-16 advantage in the all-time series, but the Racers have been looking to reverse that over the past 10 matches, winning seven. MSU has also been the winner of the last two meetings.
Scouting Eastern Illinois
The Panthers head into this weekend's action with a 10-10 overall record and a 2-5 mark in the OVC. EIU went to Illinois-Chicago at the beginning of the week and came home with a 3-0 victory, moving their winning streak to two matches.
The Panthers have improved since the last time they faced the Racers in a few key areas of the stat sheet. When the teams battled in September, EIU was hitting .199 and has increased that mark to .209 (983k-427e-2664ta). The Panthers were also getting out-blocked 1.9 to 2.4, but have improved their blocking to 2.2 blocks per set, while their opponents are still averaging 2.3.
Jorie Dieter and Alison Berens are two key reasons for the blocking numbers going up. Dieter was recently named OVC Defensive Player of the Week after recording 20 blocks in two matches, and then added nine more against UIC. Dieter now has 80 (9-74) blocks on the season, while Berens is second on the team with 60 (12-48).
Kelsey Orr has been the go-to hitter for the Panthers this season, but she missed the last match. Orr has 710 attempts and 281 kills on the season, with the next highest number being 430 attempts and 158 kills by Erin Hake. Reynae Hutchingson's totals are close to Hake's at 382 attempts and 152 kills.

EIU broke an eight-match losing streak to the Racers, Sep. 28, with a 1-3 win in Charleston, Ill. Both teams had strong performances, with near equal totals on the score sheet. MSU hit .321 (54k-12e-131ta) and recorded eight blocks, while the Panthers also tallied eight blocks and hit .324 (68k-22e-142ta).
Junior Jade Guo led the Racers with the first of two-consecutive triple-doubles (10k-39a-11d). Guo hit .526 (10k-0e-19ta) and added three blocks. Senior Becca Lamb led the team with 14 kills and had a .361 (14k-1e-36ta) hitting percentage. Red-shirt freshman Wendi Zickfield had a stand-out performance with 10 kills and a .412 (10k-2e-17ta) hitting percentage.

Swinging To Eliminate Cancer
For the third straight season the Murray State volleyball team will be hosting Swinging To Eliminate Cancer, a fundraiser to help those effected by cancer. But this season the team will be raising money to help closer to home, teaming up with Murray-Calloway County Regional Cancer Center. All the funds raised will now go to the MCCRCC in honor of Kendra Schwepker, the wife of MSU head volleyball coach David Schwepker.
This year's Swinging To Eliminate Cancer event will take place, Oct. 22-23 when MSU hosts Tennessee State and Austin Peay in Racer Arena. This year the Racers will also be returning to The Big Apple Café for a rebate night, Monday, Oct. 18. Patrons of The Big Apple Café can choose to donate a portion of their check to the cause. The volleyball team will also be on hand from 6-9 p.m. to help staff refill drinks and communicate the importance of the event to customers.
