Racers Earn 78-59 Win Over St. Catharine in Season Opener

The Murray State women's basketball team opened the 2010-11 season with a 78-59 victory over St. Catharine at the CFSB Center.
The Racers (1-0) had three players in double-digits in scoring, with junior Kayla Lowe leading the team with 14 points. The Pikeville, Ky., native also added five rebounds and three steals. Junior Rachael Isom and freshman Allison Karst each added 11 points. Redshirt-freshman Jessica Winfrey was the team's rebounding leader with nine.
The Racers were the first to score in the opening half at 19:22, but then saw their advantage erased as SCC went on a 5-0 run to take the lead. The Patriots held the advantage until 11:27 when MSU tied the game at 16, after trailing by as many as six (10-16). The Racers tied the game and then continued to push the tempo to take the lead for good, with a 15-2 run over a four minute span. After MSU started its run to take the advantage back the team ended the half on a 27-13 run and went into the locker room with a 37-29 lead.
The Racers controlled the second half momentum and built their lead out to double-digits within the first seven minutes of the second half. MSU pushed the lead out to as many as 22 in the final minutes of the game before ending with the 78-59 win.
The Racers struggled early with shooting, hitting just 15 percent of their shots in the first four minutes of the game. However, the team rebounded and shot 41.9 percent from the field in the second half and 37.7 percent for the game. After shooting 16.7 percent from beyond the arc in the opening 20 minutes, MSU shot 36.4 percent in the second half.
The first half also saw the Racers trailing the Patriots in the rebounding column, 29-20, but after the intermission MSU evened the boards at 46 for the game.
The Racers will have a day off before facing Mid-Continent, Monday, Nov. 15 at 5:15 p.m. at the CFSB Center. The home contest will be the last until Dec. 18 when Southern Illinois comes to town. MSU will play seven road games during the time away from Murray.
